In the 1990s, Kyoji Takahashi’s photographs stood out from the crowd, and have continued to influence many photographers of the same era and those who followed. Takahashi does not unknowingly accept that his photographs are photographs. He is always aware that it is not the photographer’s job to press the shutter button with good composition and accurate focus, but that expression must exist in what appears as a photograph. This is quite natural not only for photographers but also for all artists. However, if we assume that there is a depth of expression, and that the depth of expression varies from artist to artist, then each artist is asked only how far he or she is satisfied with the depth of his or her work. A good photographer knows the fact that the depth is truly deep, and takes photographs that can convey that the depth is far beyond the viewer’s imagination. That is why Takahashi’s photographs, whether in magazines or advertisements, catch people’s eyes and capture their hearts as well. As has been the case since the days of 8×10 film, Takahashi’s photographic work is handled by his own hands throughout the entire process. Not only shooting, but also enlarging, developing, and all other processes are done in his own unique way. This is quite normal for a photographer. However, I wonder how many photographers think about the one-time nature of their work. In principle, the same photograph can be duplicated if the film is the same. However, there is a difference between the principle possibility and the feasibility. There is no such thing as the same thing in this world. Once the jugular tree of reproductive art is removed, a phase transition to a one-time nature occurs. Basically, Takahashi’s works are not editioned. This is partly because the unstable production environment of his modified equipment and self-made darkroom makes it difficult to reproduce a phenomenon once it has occurred but more than that, it is because Takahashi himself is aware of the reproducibility of photography and intentionally forgets about it.but more than that, it is because Takahashi himself is aware of the reproducibility of photography and intentionally forgets about it. He sees only the “photograph” as the material in front of his eyes. He is trying to restore the “aura” to the photograph. In this solo exhibition, “Void”, Takahashi will present new works with a Leica M8, he captures a private view within his own room. The output settings of the printer were adjusted manually by himself, and the photographs that printed on Arches paper were appeared in different way from the RAW data. The daily objects captured faintly but clearly are burned onto the paper with a color balance that is slightly out of the proper. In this new series, Takahashi’s spirit is quietly tense, standing in a place just before becoming too far removed from reality. In his solo exhibition last September, we called the images that shift from one place to another such as the world, Takahashi’s eyes, camera, film, and photographs “Ghost” in photography. Photography is a medium of seance. Perhaps the new work is a hole. The deep hole in Takahashi’s mind swallows many things from reality and takes them away. The photographs are like empty shells left behind by things that have fallen apart in the void.
